Village Sketchcrawl

Here in the UK we have Mother’s Day early, so for my special gift I was given the time to go and do some solo sketching.  I think any mother appreciates the gift of “me” time once in a while!  I went down to the village to sketch one of my favourite cottages.

I don’t know much about the history of our little village in the quantocks, but this cottage strikes me as being one of the originals.  The shape is slightly curved and it has the classic thatched roof that gives it so much character.

Here’s what I managed in about half an hour.  I did some guidelines in pencil to makes sure to get all those wonky angles correct then drew in with ink.  I wanted to concentrate the focus on the doorway of the cottage so spent more time putting in detail and just suggested the rest of the cottage.  I think the effect works well.  I liked working across the spread, but this particular sketchbook has a very annoying perforated spine so it wasn’t quite as smooth as I wanted it, but for my first village sketchcrawl I am really happy with it.

There are so many more beautiful buildings in our village, I can’t wait to do some more.

  1. What a wonderful way to spend mothers day! Wonderful sketch and I envy your locale!! I have a question, I am interested in purchasing a Lamy pen. I use watercolor as well and would need to switch it to waterproof ink and get a converter. Have you done this? And how often do you clean it, if you have had to clean it?

  2. Thank you, Rebecca! I have a Lamy Safari with a converter and waterproof ink. I’ve only had it for about a week now, so haven’t cleaned it out. I think if you use it regularly (everyday) it won’t need cleaning often, I’ve heard about once a month is adequate. Cleaning is quite easy, you flush out the converter and soak the nib in clean cool water.

    I’ve been intending to do a post about the fountain pen so your comment has given me the reminder to do that 🙂

  3. Ok, that is great to hear….no pressure but I will look forward to that post. I am tired of my micron pens getting dried up so quickly….but the Lamy pen(especially here in Sweden) is quite pricey so I am having a hard time committing. Thanks for the response!

  7. What a great cottage and your sketch captured it beautifully, I like that one area is more detailed than the rest it gives the sketch more interest. Looking forward to seeing more of your lovely village. Karen
